What Will You Do in 2017?
It's going to be a new day, a new month, a whole new year.
That means all the times you fell out of barstools drunk last year can now be forgotten. Any weight you gained and any plans that failed are on the brink of a new beginning. You can finally become that person you've been meaning to be your entire life. This is the it year, this is your year.
Well, surprise! You actually could've picked any day in any year to make the changes you've been wanting to create for yourself. Each and every day you awake is a new opportunity to be whoever you want to be, good or not so good. Sometimes who we want to be does vary day to day. It's unrealistic to think we are only going to be one way for the rest of our lives - we have ups and downs, forward and backwards movement. There are days I lie in bed too hungover, eating ramen while binge watching New Girl, on other days I travel the world solo and climb mountains in Norway - it's not being hypocritical, it's creating a balance for yourself. It's a friendly reminder in the moments I'm struggling or don't feel completely happy with myself that there are so many more moments that I'm kicking absolute ass at life.
If you weren't afraid, what would you do?
But with the new year it can be a good time to do some new goal setting. I recommend creating a bucket list and a vision board for how you want your year to look. It's a good time to set new goals because you have a new time frame, and heck, everyone else is doing it. But again, if you start slipping on your goal of becoming a super model within the first month of 2017, don't be so hard on yourself. Achieving goals is as much about set backs as it is about success. The universe will hand us what we want much of the time - certainly if we're keeping positive and focusing on it - but that doesn't mean it comes right away or on a silver platter. We are also always provided with a nice, healthy dose of what we need, and what we need is not always what we want. Things are going to happen to us that are out of our control, it is equally part of the bigger picture, so brace yourself and put your best foot forward as often as you can.
No more apologizing and no more wallowing in the past - all roads lead to the future.
There are two big things I'm going to work on in 2017, maybe they can be of encouragement for you, too. First, I am going to push myself as far away from my comfort level as possible with my upcoming goals. In my opinion life becomes dangerous when you're content - when you're complacent. I'm not saying quit your job and move away to chase that dream you've always had, but also that is exactly what I'm saying. Make this year big. Make this year the one you look back on and think - That was the year I conquered. This is going to look different from person to person because we all desire different things, I just encourage you to go after whatever it is your dreaming of. I believe you can have what you want, and you should, too!
Secondly, I'm going to forgive myself for not only my past, but for the mistakes I'm going to make in the future, too. I've made some poor life choices as we all have, but I've harbored a certain amount of guilt for them that has eaten away at me. It's time to let it go - I wouldn't be where I am today without all the choices that led me here. I am as self-deprecating as they come, but it's time to go easier on myself. I can revel in the fact that I'm kind of a hot mess sometimes, but in the most endearing way. I don't always make the perfect choices, but it is my responsibility to always make a choice. My choice this year is to not be still. I am going to go after what I want because I believe I am the most deserving and capable candidate for my goals. In doing so, I will continue to love myself when things don't always go as planned because sometimes they won't.
I'm asking big things of myself in 2017, but all the years leading up to this one have proven that I can. I'd be doing myself a disservice if all of the sudden I quit asking more of myself now. 2017 is gleaming, I see nothing but success, but not because there won't be hardships or even moments of failure, but because those aren't going to stop me. The past can lie where it is, always remembered, but the future is bright. So keep looking forward and make your list big this year - make this year IT.
