Can Kickstarter Fund Your Next Travel Adventure?

Can Kickstarter Fund the Trip of a Lifetime

First off, if you’ve never heard of Kickstarter you’re in for a real treat. I am going to enlighten you to the amazing things from Kickstarter that has already opened new doors for the everyday traveler. Not only have real travelers like yourself funded their trips by using this website, but there are also many innovative and creative products are being created for travelers. Kickstarter is a Brooklyn based, public benefit corporation who focuses on creating a space for the funding of innovative projects from various artists, photographers, actors, inventors, and entrepreneurs. There are fifteen categories for people to choose for their ideas, such as the arts, technology and design. Anyone can start a project on the website, but there are a few rules to consider first: projects must create something to share with others, they must be honest and clearly presented, and there is no fundraising for charity, offering financial incentives, or using prohibited items - which they list.

The team at Kickstarter prefer not to be called a “crowdfunding” company. Crowdfunding is the practice of funding a project or venture by raising monetary contributions from a large number of people, today often performed via internet-mediated registries, but the concept can also be executed through mail-order subscriptions, benefit events, and other methods. The co-founder Perry Chen stated: "I wonder if people really know what the definition of crowdfunding is. Or, if there’s even an agreed upon definition of what it is. We haven’t actively supported the use of the term because it can provoke more confusion. In our case, we focus on a middle ground between patronage and commerce. People are offering cool stuff and experiences in exchange for the support of their ideas. People are creating these mini-economies around their project ideas. So, you aren’t coming to the site to get something for nothing; you are trying to create value for the people who support you.”

With that being said, you get the idea of Kickstarter and its purpose.

Let’s begin with Matt Harding aka Dancing Matt - a traveler, video game designer, and not-so-great dancer, but who gets to do it all over the world anyway with the support of Kickstarter. He set out do a little a “jig” in every country he could. Not long after his first dancing journey, it turned into a Youtube phenomena where you can see him and all the people he met from various cultures come together for some silly dancing. It’s a delight to see such a simple idea turn into a movement that warms the heart, and exposes how similar we all really are no matter where we are in the world. You can follow him around the globe on

photo-originalNext we have Walter Chang who was able to quit his 9-5 job and travel 60 countries over the course of 3 years by successfully utilizing Kickstarter. He set out to create a book documenting all the photos and experiences along his journey that he named “We Call This Home.” You can look up his short documentary on Youtube to get an idea for the kinds of adventures the book will guide you through. Everything he was able to see and do all started with an idea on Kickstarter - it makes you feel like anything is possible. You can follow him              on

The People With a Vision

Crowdfunded-Baubax-Swiss-Army-JacketSome travelers have used Kickstarter in a different way. Being travelers themselves, they know the ups and downs one goes through while globe trotting. There are numerous inventors who have created different gadgets and equipment to make the traveling life a little easier.

There is a coat company named Baubax who got their start on Kickstarter. They created, in my opinion,  the best travel jacket in the history of man. It has 15 different features to help hide everything from your headphones to your iPad. They also offer four different styles of jacket to pair with any occasion. Check out their video on Youtube here:

Minaal01The guys over at Minaal also had the right idea when they created their carry-on backpacks that are so multi-functional it will blow your mind. It can double as a tote or a backpack and looks so sleek it will dress to impress whether you’re traveling for business or pleasure. They recently released the second edition of the backpack after receiving feedback from their consumers, and this one seems to have covered it all. Learn more here:

The inventors of the SIMPLcase created an iPhone case that stores your sim cards and a conveniently hidden tool which changes them out. You’ll never have to worry about roaming fees again. Check them out:

These are just a few people from the Kickstarter community who have made their dreams and ideas a reality. What a wonderful website to help fuel the creativity and funding for everyday people like you and me!
